Hysteroscopy - A Womb With a View

Hysteroscopy provides a way for a physician to look inside your uterus. A hysteroscope is a thin, straw-like instrument that is inserted into the uterus through the vagina and the cervical opening. After cervical dilation, the hysteroscope is guided into the uterine cavity and an inspection is performed. This fiber-optic tool helps the doctor to diagnose and treat uterine problems. Hysteroscopy is minor surgery which is performed either in my office or in a hospital setting. It can be performed with local, regional, or general anesthesia or sometimes no anesthesia is needed at all.

Hysteroscopy has the benefit of allowing direct visualization of the uterus, thereby avoiding or reducing trauma that can be caused by "blind" procedures like dilation and curretage (D&C). There is little medical risk with this procedure for most women.
